In Kalassa, too, the children were able to return to school on time. Given the difficult situation in the country, this is by no means something to be taken for granted: of Mali’s nearly 12,000 primary schools, more than 2,400 are currently closed due to the ongoing security situation.

In Kalassa, by contrast, enrollment at the start of the school year was even higher than expected. The new classrooms for grades 4 to 6, which are already in use, now accommodate around 60 students per class instead of the 40 originally anticipated. The CAAS team has therefore temporarily provided additional tables and chairs from its own supplies.

The new building for grades 4–6, still without windows.

The growing number of students is not only coming from Kalassa itself. Children from Dissoumana, a neighborhood in the western part of Siby, are now also attending the school in Kalassa, as it is closer for many of them than the school complex in eastern Siby.

Until all the new classrooms are available, some improvisation is necessary: two classes at a time are temporarily being combined. Despite the crowded conditions, the atmosphere on the first day of school was cheerful. After the holidays, many children returned to find a significantly transformed school campus with bright new classrooms.

Construction of the new school buildings is progressing well. The classrooms for grades 4 to 6 are nearly complete and, as the photos show, are already being used for lessons. The windows were still missing: two containers carrying window frames, louvers, glass and fittings had been in transit since the end of July. Because of the insecure transport route, they had to be shipped to Mali via Abidjan instead of Dakar. A cyberattack on Mali’s financial and customs systems caused a further delay in early October. After a rather eventful journey, the containers have now arrived in Kalassa, and the windows can finally be installed.

In the future, this building will house a preschool and grades 1 to 3.

The second new primary school building, which will eventually accommodate the kindergarten and grades 1 to 3, is also making great progress. The main structure is complete and the roof is already in place. However, some patience will still be needed here as well, as the windows will take some time to arrive.

We are very happy that Kalassa’s growing school center is already providing more and more children from Kalassa and the surrounding area with reliable access to education.

On October 1, the new school year began in Mali.
