Welcome, and thank you for joining us!
Our aim is to promote the establishment of five new community gardens over the next two years. These gardens are run by women’s cooperatives – a system that has a long tradition in Mali and works very well. Each garden supports approximately 40 women.
The set-up (preparation of the site, well drilling and fencing) and initial equipment with tools amount to around 660 000 CFA (€ 1000 /$ 1100) per member. Investments of this magnitude are unaffordable for the women in the region.
That is why we need your support!
The Malian CAAS management team has identified five women’s cooperatives that are highly motivated to set up a garden. The women have all either completed a full training at CAAS or taken part in a three day workshop.
CAAS has already supported ten such community gardens. The head of the agricultural center, Alassane Boré, supervises and advises the gardeners on a long-term basis.

The president of the women’s cooperatives and associations of Siby, Djenebou Koné (pictured above in the middle, in blue), summarized the benefits of the community gardens in a speech at the opening of the Complexe Agricole of the CAAS as follows:
- The yield from the gardens ensures that the families are fed. The women can make a profit by selling some of the produce.
- The income enables the children to attend school.
- By providing a healthy diet and medical care, the gardens serve as a preventative health measure.
- The young women can now be given a dowry, which means a better start to family life.
