Diagnostic Lab: Better Health Care for Kalassa
Your donation — whether large or small — helps build a diagnostic laboratory in Kalassa and enables people to access fast and reliable medical care.
The village Kalassa in the south of Mali in Westafrika has a communal health center run by a dedicated team of health care workers and a committee which includes two representatives from the village community and the administrative secretary of CAAS, who brings business and accounting expertise.
However, the health center does not have a diagnostic lab to test for infectious diseases like typhoid fever and malaria. Patients currently have to travel long distances if they want to get tested.
A local lab would mean:
- accurate diagnosis, ensuring patients get the right treatment
- faster intervention, especially critical for children and pregnant women
- reduced transmission of infectious diseases
- income that stays in the village, strengthening the center’s sustainability
- life-saving capacity during the rainy season, when both typhoid and malaria cases surge
Once established, the laboratory will finance itself through test fees (patients already pay for these tests elsewhere—they just have to travel far to get them). The only barrier today is the initial investment in equipment and setup.
The management committee keeps detailed financial records and has been systematically saving toward the establishment of a small diagnostic laboratory. The goal is to enable malaria and typhoid testing directly on site. Given the urgency and the clear medical benefits of on-site diagnostics, we would like to accelerate this process and support the team in establishing the laboratory earlier than their savings alone would allow.
