Our conviction that reliable access to water and electricity is among the most important prerequisites for development is becoming increasingly evident in Kalassa.
For several years, international reports and expert publications have pointed out that the electrification of rural regions in Africa will, in many places, not be achieved through large centralized power grids. Decentralized solutions, particularly solar energy and mini-grid systems, are considered among the most promising ways to provide people with reliable access to energy while also stimulating economic development.
This conviction has shaped our work as well. We therefore decided to make full use of the capacity of our solar installation at the Complexe Agricole and to double the size of the existing system. These days, Yandalux is completing the installation of the new battery systems and connecting the extension to the existing grid. Over the coming weeks, an additional 100 household meters and 10 new business meters will be installed.

The effects of a reliable electricity supply are already becoming visible, even without additional financial support programmes. In recent months, three small metalworking businesses have established themselves in Kalassa.

In addition, a modern printing business that customizes a wide variety of objects has opened its doors. All of these enterprises have deliberately chosen Kalassa because reliable electricity is available here.

For us, this is evidence that investments in basic infrastructure create the conditions that enable people to take initiative, establish businesses, generate income, and shape their own future.
